Officers receive free heart screenings

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The medical staff at St. Bernards was working hard on Thursday to make sure emergency responders are taking care of themselves.

Free heart screenings took place all day at the Jonesboro Police Department.

Officers went through a series of tests to determine the health of their hearts and any potential blockages in their arteries.

Cardiovascular Stenographer Stephen McMullem said it might surprise people to know that the number one killer in America is cardiovascular disease.

“These tests are what we do on people in the hospital once they've had the heart attack and once they've had the stroke," McMullem said. "By that point, it's sort of too late, but if you can catch it beforehand we can prevent this stuff."

McMullem said one of the reasons for early detection is the first symptom of a heart attack or a stroke is an actual heart attack and or stroke. There are no warning signs at all.

He says to get proactive with your health.

Next week, they plan on visiting the Jonesboro Fire Department and after that they will go to the Craighead County Sheriff's Department.
