Pocahontas welcomes new sports team

POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) -

Starting this fall Pocahontas Public Schools will have a new sports team.

The school's athletic department is starting a boys and girls swim team for the students, after a lot of interest from parents and student swimmers.

Pocahontas Athletic Director Charles Baty says this is a great opportunity to let swimmers from around Pocahontas swim for their school as well.

"They get to swim for the school now and they get to go to the meets," Baty said. "They will get to go to regionals and then to state so they're super-excited."

Baty says there has already been a lot of interest in the team and he expects about 25 people to join. He also has high hopes for the team this season.

"Come to find out we have had a very strong summer swim team and now it is just going to be part of the school and we are very excited," Baty said.

The team will practice in the competition pool at the new aquatic center in Pocahontas. Practice is expected to start in October when the center is supposed to be completed. The team will rent the facility for practices.
