JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A man was arrested in Jonesboro Monday for stealing $100,000 from a man who was trying to raise money for a ministry.

A detective with the Jonesboro Police Department met with a man in May who claimed he had been the victim of a scam involving Roberto Estuardo Penedo, 48, of Alexandria, VA.

The man said that in January 2014 he was trying to raise money for a ministry he was involved in, when Penedo approached him and said he could increase the money he raised by investing in oil and gas option in Mexico.

According to court documents, Penedo said that if he invested $100,000 it would be increased to $300,000 at the time of the buyout.

The man agreed and signed a contract with Penedo, who was doing business as Mesoamerica Consulting Group, LLC.

When they entered into the contract, Penedo said it would take approximately 1 year for the buyout to occur.

In January 2015 the man contacted Penedo, who told him the buyout would happen on Feb. 19.

The man tried to contact Penedo on that day and couldn’t get in touch with him.

He hadn’t been able to contact him since.

Penedo was arrested and charged with a felony for theft of $25,000 or more.
