Rivercrest looks to bounce back, expects big run game

WILSON, AR (KAIT) - The Rivercrest Colts had their worst season since 2008 last year and has no plans to repeat that performance when the curtain raises on the 2015 show.

Poor defensive numbers had coach Kelly Chandler's crew hurting in 2014. They allowed 30 points weekly and 343 yards per game. Partially to blame for that effort was the inexperience of the Colts on that side of the ball. The good news, with inexperience comes experience eventually, the Colts should be better defensively but did graduate four of their top six tacklers from the 2015 team.

2014 doesn't seem to be translating to a poor 2015 for the Colts, however. Rivercrest brings back All-State Runningback Cecil Langston, who has rushed for over 3,000 yards in his career since 2012. Langston expects to do big things in his senior season for the Colts. "We've just got to make it to Little Rock this year," said Langston, "We've got a lot of juniors and sophomores ready to lead."

With Langston returning, he's expected to be a huge focal point of the Colts' offense in 2015. "We've got to run the ball," said Head Coach Kelly Chandler after Monday's practice, "We've got a runner that came back with 1800 yards last year. We've got to run the ball, he's one of our strengths."

Chandler also added that Langston should have a good line to run behind this year. "I think our size and offensive line should be a strength for us."

As for the defense, things are expected to be better this season. "Stop the run more," said Linebacker Brayden Wilson, "You know, last year we gave up way too many run yards. You know not give us many points, win more ball games."

If the Colts can solve their defensive woes they experienced last season and the offense has the type of year it is capable of, Rivercrest should be a favorite to top the always tough 3-3A Conference. "Well, we always say that we want to win the conference," said Chandler, "I mean we win the conference and we go from there."

Rivercrest will open 2015 with Paragould.
