Voters approve sales tax ordinances in 2 Poinsett County cities

POINSETT COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

The City of Harrisburg will add a 1-cent sales tax after voters approved it in a special election Tuesday.

The increase will be used to improve the city’s water system by purchasing a new well.

There were 110 residents who voted for the tax increase and 23 who voted against it.

The well would cost around $850,000, but the sales tax will only last 3 years.

The city hopes to start construction next summer.

Voters in Trumann approved a 1-cent sales tax extension Tuesday that would last another four years.

There were 367 residents who voted to pass the sales tax ordinance and 71 voted against it.

Trumann Mayor Barbara Lewallen said they will be able to do many things in the City of Trumann with this extension including improving utilities like water and sewer, resurfacing the streets and putting a new roof on the library.
