Southside residents vote for city's first leaders

SOUTHSIDE, AR (KAIT) - The City of Southside has elected their first mayor.

Ray Bowman is the new mayor of Southside.

He won 207 of the votes in the special election, while his opponent, Sheri Cavaness, received 38 votes.

There were 5 Southside Council Positions to fill.

Jerry Byrd won position 1 with 191 votes.

Vince Gay ran unopposed for position 2 and received 225 votes.

Mary Beth Bowen ran unopposed for position 3 and got 228 votes.

Joey L. Sample will fill position 4. He won with 76 votes.

Tim Fairchild beat Fern Philips to fill position 5. Fairchild received 124 votes.

The City Marshal will be Bobby R. Mize. He won with 188 votes.

Vera Byrd will serve as the City Recorder. She got 169 votes.

Byron Southerland ran unopposed for City Treasurer and received 232 votes.

This first election comes after Southside battled with the city of Batesville for several months to become its own incorporated city.
