JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro's 10-year old Cal Ripken team was faced with a tough match on Tuesday in their third pool play game at the Cal Ripken World Series.
Entering Tuesday, Upper Montgomery from Maryland had won all of their games in the American League division of the tournament. That was before they took on Jonesboro.
The pace was held by a solid pitching performance from starter Levi Lang and was supported by a strong offensive showing from the Jonesboro hitters as the team went on to defeat the Mid-Atlantic Regional Champs by the final score of 9-7.
The victory was a huge step in the right direction if Jonesboro hopes to crack into the bracket play section of the tournament.
Other results from Tuesday included Mountain Home, the North Arkansas State Champ, falling to Kennewick, WA in a hotly contested 3-2 decision that saw the Mountain Home squad get the tying run on third in the final frame but couldn't push it across. In other games, Bemidji, Minnesota topped Brookfield, Connecticut by the final of 8-7 and Janesville, Wisconsin defeated Visalia, California 4-3.
Jonesboro now enters its fourth and final pool play game on Wednesday against New England Regional Champion Brookfield, Connecticut. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm at Joe Mack Campbell Park.
Other games on Wednesday are Visalia, CA vs. Kennewick, WA and Janesville, WI vs. Manatee, FL with both of those games starting at 4. Along with Jonesboro, the other 6:00 pm matchup will be Tri-Counties, Texas vs. Bemidji, Minnesota.
Wednesday is the final day of pool play with the top 3 teams from each pool division advancing to bracket play.
