Man fleeing ASP killed in car crash

ST. FRANCIS COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

A man fleeing from state police died Thursday when his car slammed into a tree then caught fire.

The chase began around 12:15 a.m. when an Arkansas State Trooper stopped Justen Williams, 31, of Forrest City on Highway 1 near the I-40 interchange.

As the trooper approached Williams, according to an ASP spokesperson, the suspect pointed a gun at the officer and sped off.

The trooper followed Williams eastbound on I-40 for several miles, before he exited onto State Highway 38 toward Widener.

Williams was traveling at a high rate of speed through the town when he crossed a railroad track, lost control and struck a tree. The car then began to burn, ASP said.

State police and St. Francis County sheriff’s deputies pulled Williams from the burning car and administered CPR.

A local physician later pronounced him dead.

Williams’ body has been taken to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine the cause of death.
