JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - With school about to get started the Jonesboro Parks and Recreation Department is hoping to have big seasons for softball and the fall session of the Miracle League.
Softball Director Sharron Turman is reminding everyone that sign-ups are underway for the Miracle League and various softball programs going on at the Southside Softball Complex. "We're in the process of getting fall league softball kicked off and getting teams registered for fall league softball," Turman told Region 8 Sports, "That includes all the way from 8 and under machine pitch, 14 and 16-year old girls, and then our adult league is men, co-ed, and church leagues."
The deadline to sign up for youth softball is this weekend and the deadline for the church league is Wednesday, August 19.
In addition to the normal softball activities, Turman said that they are starting a new league this fall that should be fun and flexible for everyone. It's a draft league for men that is to be held every Wednesday night. Players will show up by 6:30 on Wednesday nights and pay a $10 fee and will then be drafted onto various teams to play two games per night. There is no long term commitment required and it's open to all skill levels. "We are hoping this will be a fun thing," Turman said, "Everybody who shows up and pays $10 will get the opportunity to play."
Turman hopes this new league will fit the schedule of everyone and can even help those who show up meet new people. "You'll be on a different team with different people every Wednesday," she added, "You can meet people and we just think it'll be a good time for everybody."
The new Miracle League Field will be in action once again for a fall season, sign-ups are underway for that league as well. They've extended the deadline to August 18th in order to increase the number of sign-ups they've had. "That's a couple of days after school gets started and we can get forms out to the schools and everything," Turman said. The league is for kids from 4-years old to 19-years old and there will also be one for adults with special needs as well.
Registration can be completed by visiting the Earl Bell Community Center at 1212 South Church Street in Jonesboro or by visiting jonesboro.org and downloading the proper form.
