JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - For the second straight season, Jonesboro and Valley View will battle at Centennial Bank Stadium in the Simmons First Bank Crosstown Showdown.
On Friday, a news conference was held to announce the matchup and allow the media to meet both teams. They shared their excitement about opening the season in style. "We're looking forward to a great football game, a great atmosphere," said Valley View Head Coach Sean Cockrell, "We didn't play in another atmosphere like it all year."
Jonesboro Head Coach Randy Coleman said this game has some city-wide stakes on it. "This is for all intents and purposes the city championship," said Coleman, "You look at our two programs and they're the two successful football programs over the last few years."
In 2014, Jonesboro ran away with a 51-0 victory over the Blazers. Valley View struggled last season after losing over 20 seniors to graduation from the 2013 State Semifinalist team and losing its head coach.
For Jonesboro, they were steady as always last season. The Hurricane made their fourth straight semifinals appearance but unfortunately suffered their fourth straight loss in the semis.
Valley View brings in some young talent including sophomores that were a part of the 8-2 junior high team last year. The Blazers will be making the move to the Flex Bone offense in 2015 and focusing more on the ground attack.
Coleman's Hurricane will be young as well, they'll have a sophomore quarterback but do return some skill position players like receiver Ke'dren Brunson.
The game will be played at Centennial Bank Stadium on September 4 at 7:00 pm.
Region 8 Sports will be live at the game and have coverage that night on the season's first edition of Football Friday Night. The Crosstown Showdown will be the Game of the Week.
