SPRINGFIELD, MO (ASU) — The Arkansas State women’s soccer team fell to Missouri State 2-0 at the Betty and Bobby Allison Stadium Friday evening in an exhibition match.
A-State fell behind in the 14 minute when the Lady Bears’ Brooke Prondzinski picked up a loose ball from 30 yards and dribbled in for a 1-on-1 chance with the A-State goalkeeper and sent the ball into the net for the early advantage.
Missouri State added to its lead in the 79 minute when Kristina Tomoras collected a rebound off a save around the goal and sent the ball into the back of the net to give the Lady Bears a two goal cushion with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
“It was great to have a competitive game for our first time out,” A-State head coach Brian Dooley said. “We were challenged at both ends of the field. We gave up a few goals that we could have prevented, but those are things we are going to have to work with. Offensively I thought we were a little bit passive, but I think if we can start to believe in our attack and our ability we will be fine.
The Red Wolves moved the ball well, particularly in the second half, and had several scoring opportunities nearly find their way into the goal.
A-State freshman Kassie Flynn nearly tied the game at the start of the second half with a quick strike on goal, but the Lady Bears were able to clear the strike before the Red Wolves could collect a rebound. Sophomore Tayler Carter also had a good look at the goal in the 63rd minute, but also had her attempt saved.
Freshman Arianna Delli Carpini took a header off a corner kick by Carter in the 70th minute, but again the Red Wolves were denied the equalizer by Missouri State’s defense.
A-State had four of its eight shots land on goal on the night and played all three of its goalkeepers. Senior Amanda Lee started the game, played 29 minutes and made two saves. Sophomore Alexis Philippe played 30 minutes, while freshman Kelsey Ponder played the final 29 minutes and made three saves.
A-State will officially open the 2015 season Friday, Aug. 21 at Southern Miss and will return to Jonesboro to play Arkansas-Pine Bluff for its home opener on Sunday, Aug. 23 at the A-State Soccer Complex. Kickoff for Sunday’s match is set for 1 p.m.
