HOLCOMB, MO (KAIT) - Holcomb R-III students head back to school Friday.
Most schools started earlier this week, but Holcomb uses Friday to easy into the school year.
Superintendent Ashley McMillian says the teachers and students like to have this day to come back and get organized before starting work.
"Normally that first day is teachers handing out their books and that sort of things so we normally just use Friday to do that and we come back in fresh on Monday and get going," McMillian said.
Holcomb school district is on a 164 day school year, which they switched to four years ago. They previously were on a 174 day schools year, but McMillian says he has no plans on going back to that schedule.
Holcomb schools go an extra 18 minutes in the day to be able to take off these 10 days off, according to McMillian.
He says the students, teachers and parents enjoy these extra days they have in the summer.
McMillian says he expects the first day of school to go smoothly.
He does encourage people to be cautious Friday though as the buses will be back out on the streets.
"Our bus routes here typically stay the same and with bus safety have them out there early and watch them get picked up, don't just leave them out there," McMillian said.
McMillian is excited for the students to come back for the year, especially after a successful summer school he said they completed.
