CHERRY VALLEY, AR (KAIT) - After a tough playoff loss to McCrory in the 2014 2A State Quarterfinals, the Cross County Thunderbirds are back and ready for another round.
The T-Birds have a key piece back for their 2015 campaign. Runningback Anfernee Davis will be in the backfield this season after rushing for 2,307 yards last year with 31 touchdowns.
Cross County was 9-4 in 2014, finishing in a three way tie for the conference championship with Earle and East Poinsett County.
Head Coach Steve Williams is back for another season and feels good about what he has. "You know our back field with Jerry (Andrews) and Anfernee (Davis) coming back that's a great group," he said, "We've got three linemen coming back and our senior class is a big group we've got 15 seniors."
Davis and Senior Jerry Andrews have put a lot of work in to step up their game and take things a step further, "Working on hitting the holes harder, been watching my own film, looking at what I can do better," Davis said, "Just protecting the ball better because that's what ended our season last year. I've got to make sure that can't happen again."
For Andrews, he's ready to see what this team can do. "I feel like we're going to come back and have a really good season," he said,"The way we lost last season is going to drive us to better this year."
Williams feels the team was hurt by the way the season ended and that is a big motivational factor this year. "This group is hungry," he told Region 8 Sports, "They're kind of mad the way the season ended last year and they're kind of hungry to prove themselves."
Cross County opens the 2015 slate against Harrisburg.
