Man wrestles unloaded gun away from would-be robber

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro police are investigating a robbery attempt outside a convenience store.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday police were called to Kum & Go, 3105 Stadium Boulevard, in reference to the incident.

Officer Josh Landreth met with the victim who said he had just been inside the store buying coffee and was outside looking at movies in the Red Box machine when the suspect approached, pointing a .22-caliber revolver at him demanding money.

The victim said he backed away from the suspect and toward the entrance of the store and said he didn't have any money.

The police report states the suspect continued toward the man and said, ""I will shoot you, give me your money."

The man then, according to the report, reached out and grabbed the pistol. The two struggled over the weapon briefly until the man was able to wrestle it away from the suspect.

Once the pistol was taken away from the suspect, the man pointed the gun on the suspect and "pulled the trigger two times," according to the report.

However, the pistol would not fire and Landreth later found the gun to be unloaded.

The suspect reportedly ran west from the store, toward the movie theater.

Police made several attempts to find the suspect, but he was not located.

Video surveillance was checked, but no cameras were pointed in the area of the incident. The store clerk also did not witness the altercation.

The would-be robber is described by the victim as a young, black male (16 to 20 years old), 5'10" tall and has short hair.

He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, black ball cap, shorts and a tan rag or bandana around his neck.
