A landmark Jonesboro business might relocate in the future if a national chain gets what they want.
CVS Pharmacy has expressed interest in the old Harp's Food Stores location off Madison Street. However, CVS told the city they will need to close a portion of Madison Street to make the new building a reality.
That's not the only thing that might change on the corner of Highland Drive and Southwest Drive though.
Region 8 News obtained the site plans that CVS submitted to the City of Jonesboro. In those plans, Bennett's Nursery is gone.
According to Bennett's though, nothing is final right now. Bennett's Nursery and Garden Center has been at the corner of Highland and Southwest for twenty years.
Region 8 News spoke with Bennett's owner Marty Bennett Wednesday afternoon.
Bennett said any possibility of them moving is contingent upon that partial closure of Madison Street and further discussions with CVS.
Some area residents don't like the idea though.
"I hate to see somebody uprooted. They're established...they've been there a long time," Highland Drive resident Becky Breland said.
Breland's father built the home she currently lives in. Though she said she would hate to see Bennett's move, it wouldn't bother her if Madison Street closed.
"I rarely use Madison Street, I have on occasion but that is no problem for me," Breland said.
Many other neighbors in the area spoke with Region 8 News off camera and also did not have a problem with partial closure of Madison Street.
For others though, it will cause convenience issues. Some people use Madison Street to get from Highland to Southwest Drive.
"I cut through there a lot to avoid the light, like everyone else, I'm sure," Linda Williams said. "I sure would hate to see it close because I do use it quite a bit."
The city council will hold a third reading about closing Madison on September 1.
Depending on how the council votes, there could be a CVS at the corner of Highland and Southwest Drives instead of Bennett's Nursery.
However, Bennett told Region 8 News that if that happens, Bennett's will not close. Relocation might even give them an opportunity to expand their operations to better serve the Northeast Arkansas area.
We'll continue to track this story and let you know what happens.
