MONETTE, AR (KAIT) - The Craighead Sheriff's Department is investigating an animal cruelty case where a dog was shot and burned.
According to the police reports, the dog was found on County Road 506 in Monette.
Police were called out to a home on County Road 543 after the homeowners found their dog burned.
The dog owner said in the report his dog went missing earlier this month and 10 days later he found him dead.
According to the police report Robert Garrett and his wife found their dog shot and burned in a pile of trash near their neighbors house.
Garrett told police they went searching around the neighborhood after they could smell a dead animal.
The neighbors told officers the land where the burn pile is located is not part of their property.
They claim it is part of a public dumping site and they knew nothing about the dog being there.
Police did find the burn pile when they arrived and saw a gruesome scene.
"It looks like somebody had thrown trash on top of it, the dog had been shot and then the trash set on fire," Eastern District Deputy Garland Tipton said.
When police took Garrett's statement he claims the day his dog went missing he saw his neighbor and his son walking around with rifles.
Garrett then told police he also heard gun shots that night.
Deputy Tipton is still investigating the dog's death and taking statements from neighbors.
