MANILA, AR (KAIT) - Manila public schools recently received a $20,000 computer science grant.
The grant was awarded by the state department of education and was part of the governor's computer science initiative, which is to have all high schools offer computer science courses.
Manila High School has already started the new computer science course and with this grant they can now get the technology and textbooks needed.
The grant will allow the school to purchase 15 computers for the students and one for the teacher of the class.
Federal Coordinator for the school Robin Baugher said the students are excited for the new course.
Baugher said this is hopefully the start of more computer science courses for Manila students.
"If this is as successful as we plan then is to offer coding at the lower grades in the future so that we can offer more advanced classes at the high school," she said.
The school hopes these computer science skills will help students in the future and into college.
