Region 8 sees shortage in special education teachers

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - Many schools around Region 8 have seen a shortage in special education teachers.

This has been a trend around the state for several years and schools are struggling to fill the positions.

Nettleton Public Schools currently has two openings for special education teachers for this school year.

Greene County Tech has also seen struggled to fill these positions, this year they recruited from within the school.

Even training current teachers for these positions takes some time and extra work.

"When you teach special education you teach all grade levels, sometimes all grade levels and sometimes you teach all subjects so you don't just teach in one area, you have to be pretty knowledgeable in all areas," Greene County Tech psychology specialist, Donna Ashley said.

Ashley listed multiple reasons there may be a shortage in teachers including the additional training and paperwork required to be certified by the state.

Schools around Region 8 have been working with each other trying to recruit and hire the special education teachers.
