Body of man found in Mississippi River identified

BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT) - The identity of the man who was found more than 35 miles downstream from the scene of a barge accident has been confirmed by the state medical examiner.

According to Mississippi County Coroner Mike Godsey, the state confirmed a body found on August 6, 2015 is that of Juan Nieves. Nieves died in April, 2014 after a barge overturned on the Mississippi River.

Nieves and another man, Nicolas Perez Hernandez, were killed when the barge overturned at Kinder Morgan's facility near Nucor Steel.

Nieves was located 36 miles from where the accident took place. Hernandez was found 17 days after the accident, 10 miles downstream.

The family of Hernandez has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
