JONESBORO -- Rotary Club is a network of volunteers across the United States and in more than 160 countries, and Wednesday is a milestone for the organization.

The first Rotary Club was started in Jonesboro in 1919. These days, there are three clubs and more than 250 Rotarians.

"They want to do things for the community and Rotary is a good outlet for them to do that," said Gene Wing, President of Rotary Club of Jonesboro.

A celebration Wednesday marked the Centennial Anniversary at the Jonesboro Country Club and showed just how far the club has come.

"Rotary used to not allow women in but they do now," said Jay Cluevenger, President of University Rotary Club, "Women are a great, great asset to our clubs and we've found that some of our women members are really great members and have been Rotarians of the year."

And as for the future of Rotary, it's looking good so far. Centennial President of Jonesboro Rotary Club Greg Bauders, "As far as over the last 100 years, Rotary has gotten more international. We've taken more international projects, polio being the latest and greatest project." Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 31,000 Rotary Clubs.
