Deputy claims adult protective services failed to help

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - An Independence County Sheriff's deputy said despite alerting adult protective services, he was unable to get any help in dealing with someone who was mentally challenged.

According to a police report, Deputy Ernie Gillihan received a call Tuesday from a person who noticed a 32 year old man walking on Union Hill Road in Independence County.

In the report, the caller stated he "was afraid he (32 year old) was going to get struck by a vehicle."

Gillihan said the man "probably had the mind of a 5 year old" when he arrived on the scene. As Gillihan approached, the man said that he was looking for his mother.

Gillihan said he had to get onto the man for misbehaving and he was acting "very mischievous."

A friend of the man eventually showed up to take him home, but adult protection services never arrived or called back.
