Did you know United Way of Northeast Arkansas turns 60 in September? We have evolved from serving the city of Jonesboro and 6 agencies when we began in 1955 to serving 8 counties and funding 21 programs today.
We have served our local communities through projects like providing handicapped facilities at Randolph County Fairgrounds, landscaping at county courthouses and playground equipment at Craighead Forrest Park. We have provided additional support through American Red Cross during times of local historic flooding and tornado damage. We helped recruit hundreds of volunteers to help provide needed emergency assistance when Hurricane Katrina evacuees were forced to leave their homes and come to Jonesboro. We also helped administer donations during that time as well as during the Westside tragedy.
Several entities and non-profits received start-up funds from United Way over the years. Imagine your community today without the Church Health Center or City Youth. How many lives have been improved by services of all the non-profits United Way has provided funding to since 1955?
How different our community would look today if our founding leaders had not had the courage to step up and accept responsibility in starting United Way. We are so thankful to them and the thousands of volunteers that have served through the years in making United Way successful and encourage those that have not had the opportunity to volunteer in the past, to please consider doing so.
We will be celebrating our 60th birthday on September 25th in conjunction with our annual Day of Caring. Hundreds of volunteers will be giving their time to help non-profits with projects they would otherwise have to pay someone to have done. What a great way to start the next 60 years and have United Way be the best it can be! Happy Birthday United Way!
