JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A report of hazardous driving led to the arrest of a Jonesboro man on felony drug charges.
Kevin J. Hicks, 25, is charged with possession of meth or cocaine with the purpose to deliver greater than 2 grams but less than 10 grams and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms.
Police arrested Hicks Monday afternoon while investigating a report of a hazardous driver in the area of Roseclair and Bridge Street.
Officer Pete Lochner reported observing a red PT Cruiser driving at a "high rate of speed" in a 20 mile an hour zone.
Lochner followed the car into the Garden Manor apartments where he said the occupants jumped out and ran away.
Other officers responding to the scene stopped a white Toyota Prius that had reportedly made a U-turn and attempted to leave the apartment complex in a hurry.
While Officer Jeremy Smith questioned the driver and her passengers, Officer Tyler Wilson stated he saw a passenger in the back seat "was acting nervous and was hiding his right hand under his right leg."
Wilson said when the passenger, later identified as Hicks, rolled his window down he tossed a plastic baggie with a "white substance inside of it" onto the floor of the vehicle.
Officer Wilson then told Hicks to get out of the car and placed him into custody.
While searching Hicks, Wilson said he found a Taurus .40 caliber handgun concealed on his right hip. The officer said there was one round in the chamber and five more in the magazine.
Wilson also reported finding 2 bags of suspected methamphetamine, weighing 7.2 grams and valued at $750, in the rear floorboard.
Hicks is being held at the Craighead County Detention Center awaiting a probable cause hearing.
