New hotel will include convention center

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Jonesboro’s newest hotel will include a convention center.

The owner of Hyatt Hotels, Chuck Keller, told Region 8 News Tuesday his newest hotel will include a 35,000 to 40,000 square foot convention center in addition to the 150-room hotel. The project will be built at the Centre Park complex on Browns Lane Access, where the old City Services Center used to be.

Keller says Jonesboro is the place to be.

“We love Jonesboro. It's one of the only communities we know of in the United States that you have the university and the industry growing at the same time. Most of the time you either have the university growing or the industry growing. Jonesboro is on the move,” Keller said.

Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin says work on the site should begin this fall.

As for the city's cost, Mayor Perrin says the city plans to build the parking lot for the convention center. The mayor didn't offer a specific cost for that phase of the project as a site plan has yet to be approved.
