Local farmers help Westside students learn about agriculture through grant

CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - The Westside School District recently got some exciting news.

The agricultural department received a $25,000 grant from Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund.

The program allows farmers to nominate a rural public school from their community to win the grant.

Agriculture Teacher Josh Parks said they were nominated by 18 local farmers.

The money will be used to build a shop and a main barn.

"Animal Science and Argronomy Science are so important," Sparks said. "And it will give them a first-hand option to even look at it because so many times you read about something in a book, but unless you actually do it you don't have an opportunity to really learn from it."

Parks said this is something they hope to utilize for every grade in the Westside School District.
