Miracle League of Jonesboro needs volunteers

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The Miracle League of Jonesboro is desperate for volunteers.

Games will kick off next week and they need a buddy for every child.

“The only way our league can run is if each player has a volunteer,” Miracle League Coordinator Camelia Ballard said. “If a player doesn’t have a volunteer then they can’t go out on the field and play, which is what this is all about. This is for kids to come out who don’t get to play in regular leagues. This is for them. For them to come out and play. Like big brothers, sisters, friends that they’ve had to sit and watch play. So, now it’s their turn.”

It’s a buddy’s job to assist their child while they play.

“Their buddy takes care of them and helps them around the field,” Volunteer Coordinator Arla Metcalf said. “They help them bat or they help them get their equipment on. They just kind of take care of them when they’re out on the field.”

Metcalf said watching these kids get to play is a life-changing experience.

“Seeing these kids get to play ball, even for the first time, is one of the most amazing things you’ll ever see,” Metcalf said. “I have a friend that came out and had never done baseball before. And he almost cried because he was like I get to help somebody to run bases and I get to bat. And we get that response from everyone.”

They need 100 to 150 buddies.

“We’re going to keep the number up,” Metcalf said. “If someone wants to come and do a morning game because they have something in the afternoon we need somebody else to step in and fill that spot for them in the afternoon.”

Games are just around the corner and there isn’t enough help yet.

“The games are starting next Saturday on September 12,” Metcalf said. “They will start at 8:30. So, we want all volunteers to be here 8 and check in with me. And we are looking forward to so many people coming out and helping these kids.”

A buddy needs to be at least 12 years old.

To be a volunteer, you can log onto the Miracle League's Facebook page or call (870) 530-0715.

Thanksgiving is a time to be with loved ones and enjoy good food, but since that is not an option for everyone, members of the Jonesboro community came together to make sure as many people as possible were fed.
