False alarm sends Region 8 school into lockdown mode

MELBOURNE, AR (KAIT) - An alert that put a Region 8 school on lockdown was all a mistake.

Melbourne Elementary School went into lockdown mode Wednesday with teachers reportedly barricading rooms after an alert was issued from the principal's cellphone.

According to Superintendent Dennis Sublett it was all an accident. He called it a "drill without the knowledge of a drill."

Apparently the panic button on the principal's cell phone was pushed for some unknown reason, he said.

"The principal has no idea how it happened," Sublett told Region 8 News.

He said there was no threat of harm to anyone on campus of any kind.

Sublett commended the school's teachers, saying they "did a magnificent job keeping the students calm and safe."

School officials are alerting parents of the situation and looking for ways to prevent a similar scare from happening again.
