Walnut Ridge, AR (Williams) - The American Midwest Conference has honored Williams Baptist College forward Matheus Allonso and keeper Javier Piedra with conference accolades. Allonso has been named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Piedra has been honored as the Defensive Player of the Week.
The Eagles have had a stellar week of play, as they came out victorious in both of their matches, furthering their perfect record to 3-0. Major performances came from both sides of the ball for the Eagles, as they were able to upset the 19th ranked Lynx of Lindenwood University-Belleville and take both Player of the Week honors for Men's Soccer.
Allonso scored a combined three goals this week in wins over Hendrix College and the LU-B. The forward currently leads the AMC in goals scored (4), shots (15), and shots on goal (9).
"Allonso played two great games, scoring three fantastic goals,” said Head Coach Shane Stolz. “He works hard every day to get better and it is exciting to see him earn this honor.”
Piedra played every minute in goal for Williams this week, and posted a shutout in a 3-0 win over Hendrix on Tuesday. He had eight saves in the two Eagles victories. For the season, Piedra has allowed only one goal in three games. Piedra’s rock solid performance paved the way to his earning this week's Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
"Javi made some key saves this week. He has turned into a leader for us from the back. He is fully deserving of this honor," added Stolz.
Williams is off to its best start in the past 11 seasons with its 3-0 mark. The Eagles will play again on Tuesday, against Evangel University, with kick-off slated for a 4 p.m. start at the WBC Soccer Field.
