Having a Ball for the Kids

February 26, 2004 -- Posted at 10:36 p.m. CST

Jonesboro -- Members of the Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro spend thousands of hours doing community service every year. Saturday night the community gave back to them.

The Holiday Inn in Jonesboro was hopping Saturday as 450 guest attended the annual Charity Ball. The event is the only fundraiser for the Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro.

"It's about kids in our community and making sure that their needs are met, and not just our kids." said Melanie Phillips, chairman of this year's ball.

The women of the Junior Auxiliary have been doing community for needy children in Craighead County for 50 years. But it takes money, the charity ball is how they raise it all.

"You see the best of Jonesboro because people are willing to give," said ball goer Bill Brown.

Supporters are greeted with cocktails and bid on items in a silent auction when they first arrive. Then they move into the dinning area where they enjoy a formal meal and live auction. They wrap up the night on the dance floor.

The event usually raises 40 - 50 thousand dollars for the organization.

Event planners say they will start planning for next years event ASAP.
