JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Students and faculty at Arkansas State University took part in a self-defense class Thursday night.
The class kicked off at 6 p.m. in the Student Union and ran until 7:30 p.m.
The Counseling Center partnered with campus police to put on the event.
A-State students, faculty and anyone from the community were invited to participate.
Before the class Sergeant Traci Simpson with the University Police Department explained what the students would learn.
"We're going to go over some ways that they can get out of like a choke hold which is one of the highly favorites that an abuser would do," Simpson said. "I'm going to teach them some moves on how to do that and it's basically just some simple moves like a strike maybe some kicks that they can use to get away from their attacker."
Simpson said she hopes to hold a self-defense class once a month.
