City leaders believe tax is needed to continue economic growth

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro's economy continues to grow and the infrastructure is expected to keep up with that growth.

The City of Jonesboro held a press conference Monday morning about proposed capital improvement projects.

City leaders hope those projects can be funded in part by two new sales taxes equaling one cent.

Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mark Young said the economic development portion of the sales tax is critical in the future success of the city.

"Being able to have the capacity to continue to grow our economy is extremely important to our community and the entire region," Young said. "So, it's extremely important that we be able to have funds to invest in infrastructure and land and workforce development and training."

A special election for the proposed sales taxes will be held Nov. 11.

The city will host public hearings beforehand to give citizens a look at what the money from the tax would be used for.
