TOLEDO, OH (KAIT) - Speaking at his weekly news conference, Toledo Head Coach Matt Campbell talked about Arkansas State as he had about Arkansas and Iowa State in weeks prior. He feels they're talented.
Unfortunately for the opponents of the Rockets, that didn't seem to stop them from leaving with victories and getting themselves in position to receive top 25 votes while knocking off the #18 team in the nation.
In Campbell's fifth season as head coach, Toledo defeated #18 Arkansas 16-12 at War Memorial Stadium, then followed that up with an overtime win against Iowa State this past weekend. The Rockets also have a history against Arkansas State, defeating the Red Wolves 63-44 in the GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile, Al.
The Rockets have proven their strength and entering a home game against the Red Wolves, Campbell paid Arkansas State a great compliment. "Obviously prepared for an Arkansas State team that is equally as talented in my opinion as any team we've played so far," said Campbell in his weekly news conference.
The young head coach also indicated that the result of the GoDaddy Bowl would not factor much into this season's game. "Obviously, we played them just four games ago but they're really a totally different team," said Campbell, "Four games ago they were an injured team at the end of last season and they're a very healthy team coming into this season."
Campbell is correct in his thoughts that Arkansas State was banged up last season. Several skill position players battled injuries and either missed the bowl game or were limited with their health. The likes of which included runningback Michael Gordon and Wide Receiver JD McKissic. Defensively, the Red Wolves defensive line was in shambles with very little depth.
This time, A-State should have a healthy Gordon and McKissic while also having a much deeper defensive line. The health concern entering the game will be senior quarterback Fredi Knighten, who is expected to play after injuring his groin against Missouri two weeks ago. The A-State Offensive Line has been banged up but according to Red Wolves Offensive Coordinator Walt Bell, will be getting three players back after only having six dressed against Missouri State in week three.
Toledo and Arkansas State will tee it up at 6:00 pm central on Saturday from the Glass Bowl in Toledo. Arkansas State is 1-2 while the Rockets enter with a 2-0 record.
