Former students saddened by the loss of an old school

BURDETTE, AR -

Many former students of the Burdette school were saddened to hear the loss of the school building in a fire.

Early Sunday morning, the old school in Burdette burned, leaving only bricks behind.

The suspected cause is arson, but the fire department is still investigating at this time.

Region 8 spoke with one couple who had fond memories of the school they attended as children.

Kenny Payne said the school was a great, little country school with caring teachers and staff.

Payne and his wife Mary met at the school and later fell in love.

"We were going steady in the 8th and 9th grades up here at Burdette." Payne said. "The sidewalk used to be called lovers lane and all the kids would walk the sidewalk around the building."

The couple walked around the "lover's lane" multiple times while they were in school.

They said it is devastating to see a building full of so many memories just gone.
