Injured Firefighter Still Helping Others

Posted at 11:00 pm February 28, 2005

"I didn't know what to expect, didn't know what to do. When it first happened I thought well, over a period of time I'll rehab and go back to the fire department."

In April of last year, Tim Rook, a Jonesboro Firefighter, was doing his job, responding to the call. Moments later there was a second call to help him. His rig collided with a semi, trapping tim inside. An accident that cost Tim Rook his left leg and his career as a firefighter.

"It's hard, it's hard. It's not leaving the job, its 'having' to leave the job. Having to leave, not being my choice made it even harder."

"There's not too much that will keep him down." says fellow fire fighter Kevin Miller, "He is up and at it, he is always doing something. He didn't let this slow him down at all."

That's for sure. Tim, now with his prosthetic left leg, is still helping people. Where he once moonlighted as a nurse between shifts you can now find him in the cath-lab at NEA hospital full time.

"If I had my choice, I'd be back the way I was. But having no choice, there are definately some good things; knowing people care, slowing down and seeing things."

Tim officially left the department in November but he carries JFD with him every day with his department ring and a tattoo, the department logo on his new left leg.

Other firefighters say , "He comes around occasionally. We have to give him a hard time when he comes around. He's not just a coworker, he's a good friend. Still is."

"We don't treat him any different, we still raz him, but it's Tim. Nothing special. It's Tim."

   "It just lifts everybody up."

And that seems to be Tim's new second job, inspiring people with his attitude. He almost died, he lost his leg, he can't do the job he loves and he considers himself fortunate.

"Lucky? in more ways than one. Yes I am."
