A Better Region 8 Guest Editorial: Sales tax initiatives to help manage Jonesboro's growth

It's no secret that Jonesboro has been blessed with continued growth, and that means our streets and roads have got to grow as well to keep up.  That is why this November there's a special election to vote on two sales tax initiatives.  One is to help our economy grow even more by helping create jobs; and the other is to get our roads ready to handle today's traffic, as well as the future growth of our city.

We have become the regional leader in healthcare, education, retail, hospitality and service.  We are a population quickly approaching 75,000.  If we only maintain the annual growth rates we have experienced for the past 30 years, we will be a city of 100,000 in the next 10-12 years.  The simple fact of the matter is that we cannot handle 25% more traffic in the next 10 years without some major investment in roadway improvements.

But, facts aside, YOU the voter have the final say.  And in order to make sure that you can make an informed decision, we are hosting a series of public meetings across the city outlining the specifics of these projects.  We'll show you how they impact certain neighborhoods and projected timelines for completion.  It's a chance for all the media including KAIT to cover and report on those specifics.  But more importantly, it's a chance for you... the voter to see the plans and ask as many questions as you have.

To get a full list of events, log onto the city's web page at www.Jonesboro.org

God willing, growth is going to happen.  Being ready for it, having a say in it and understanding it before November's vote certainly makes this A Better Region 8.
