Hayti man arrested for assault on police officer

HAYTI, MO (KAIT) - A Hayti man was arrested Tuesday, Sept. 22 after assaulting and threatening a police officer who was trying to break up a fight.

Officer Steven Hill with the Hayti Police Department responded to the 600-block of West Lee Street on Sept. 12 in reference to a large crowd causing a disturbance.

While trying to break up the crowd, he saw two women fighting.

Officer Hill tried to break up the fight, but the woman refused to stop and pulled him to the ground into a ditch.

Hill warned the woman that if they didn't stop fighting he would tase them.

That's when Hill was kicked in the jaw, breaking one of his lower jaw teeth.

Hill's statement in the police report states that he could hear a man saying "don't tase my girl or I'll kill you."

Hill tried to get up, but someone was on his back holding him down and hitting him.

Once he was able to pull out his taser, Hill said everyone started to run away.

The two women, Daonna J. Gooden, 20, and Erica Mitchell, 18, were both taken into custody.

Several witnesses at the scene identified Michael Stewart, 24, as the person who kicked Officer Hill.

They also agreed to look at a photo lineup and testify about the incident.

Stewart was picked up Tuesday on a Pemiscot County warrant for first degree assault on law enforcement.
