JONESBORO, AR (astateredwolves.com) – The Arkansas State volleyball team climbed to No. 23 in the latest edition of the PrepVolleyball.com Poll, while Carlisa May (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) won her third consecutive Freshman of the Week award per an announcement by the Sun Belt Conference league office Monday afternoon.
The Red Wolves improved to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in SBC play with a 3-1 victory over UT Arlington Friday night before a 3-0 sweep of Troy Saturday night. The No. 23 ranking is two spots up from the 25th spot the Red Wolves held last week. The Red Wolves are 2-1 against other teams in the poll with wins over No. 39 Missouri State and No. 45 Saint Louis. A-State’s only loss of the season is to No. 46 Missouri.
May had another solid weekend by tallying the third-most kills on the team with 19 in the two wins. She had the second-best kills-per-set mark at 3.17 and had the second-highest attacking percentage of any A-State player at .361. The outside hitter had 10 kills in the four sets against UTA before registering nine kills in only two sets versus Troy on an astounding .667 hitting percentage with only one error.
The FOW award is May’s fourth total this season, breaking the record Jessica Uke set last season with three accolades. She is second on the team in total kills with 160 and leads the team with a 3.48 kills per set average. Her hitting percentage of .317 is second best on the team and she has also contributed 29 digs and 13 blocks on the defensive side of the net.
The Arkansas State volleyball squad returns to action Oct. 2 at Louisiana-Lafayette. First serve from Lafayette, La., is set for 6:30 p.m.
