PITTSBURGH, PA (KAIT) - For the third straight season, the Cardinals have won the National League Central Division title after defeating the Pirates in game two of a critical doubleheader in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.
St. Louis now heads to the postseason and its fifth straight NLDS appearance.
The Cardinals dropped the opening game on Wednesday by the final score of 8-2, setting up a showdown for the series win and putting the champagne on ice for St. Louis.
In game two, another lopsided score favored the Cardinals this time as Jason Heyward's grand slam put the Redbirds up 6-0 and they'd never look back. Heyward finished a triple shy of the cycle while also making a spectacular play in the field to rob the Pirates of a home run as the Cardinals reduced their magic number to zero.
Pittsburgh had been chasing St. Louis the majority of the season and now will face off with the division rival Chicago Cubs in the wild card game on October 7.
The Cardinals will play in the NLDS on October 9 and will likely play the winner of that Pirates/Cubs matchup.
