JONESBORO, AR (ASU) – The Arkansas State women’s soccer team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 1-1 tie against Georgia State Friday afternoon in the Red Wolves Sun Belt Conference home opener at the A-State Soccer Park.
Jordan Adams scored her team leading fourth goal five minutes into the game to give the Red Wolves an early 1-0 lead. The goal was setup on a flip throw by Kassie Flynn who, placed a perfect ball to the head of Adams and then flicked it over the top of Christa Fox’s head and into the net for the goal.
Adams was able to put enough spin and power on the ball, despite having her back to the goal on the shot, while Flynn picked her up sixth assist on the year, second most in the Sun Belt thus far.
A-State (2-9-1, 0-2-1) held the lead until the 81st minute when Georgia State (8-1-3, 2-0-1) was able to break through the Red Wolves’ backline. Caitlin Ray collected a ball from Jenna Moore in the box and was able to dribble into enough open space to put a shot on goal that was just out of the reach of Amanda Lee.
In the overtime periods, Lee and the A-State defense were able to withstand six corner kick chanced from the Panthers to earn the tie. Lee finished with seven saves on the night.
“This performance has been lingering for a few a games now,” A-State soccer coach Brian Dooley said. “It wasn’t pretty, but it was gritty. I was just pleased with how we had we were able to continue to battle through to end the game, even when we gave up the goal, we continued to fight.”
A-State’s goal in the first half marked the eighth time this season that the Red Wolves have scored the first goal of a match. Arkansas State also scored the first goal in its overtime loss to Texas State in its previous outing.
