JONESBORO, AR (astateredwolves.com) – Arkansas State’s Carlisa May won her fourth consecutive Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Week award, while Mallory Warrington earned her first SBC Setter of the Week honor this season the league office announced Monday afternoon. The Red Wolves also moved up one spot to No. 22 in the PrepVolleyball.com poll released Monday.
A native of Lee’s Summit, Mo., May was fantastic for the Red Wolves again over the past weekend, which saw the team collect 3-0 wins over Louisiana-Lafayette and ULM. The outside hitter posted 22 kills (3.67 per set) on a .462 hitting percentage. She had 11 kills in each match with a .533 attack percentage against the Ragin’ Cajuns and a .417 mark against the Warhawks. Additionally, she only had four errors all weekend and added two digs to go along with two blocks defensively.
May is having an outstanding freshman campaign for the Red Wolves with the second most kills on the team (182) and most kills per set (3.50) with the kills per set mark ranking in a tie for third-highest in the conference. She also has the second-best hitting percentage on the team at .332, which ranks in a tie for seventh best in the SBC. This is her fifth FOW award, which is a school record, and sixth overall weekly award from the conference.
Warrington, a Lake St. Louis, Mo., native, registered another solid weekend for the Red Wolves as she handed out 75 assists (12.50 per set) in the pair of wins. She dished out 40 assists against the Ragin’ Cajuns before recording 35 more against ULM. Additionally, she posted double-doubles in each match to give her a team-leading 10 on the season.
The junior setter is averaging 11.34 assists per set, the second-best mark in the conference, and is second on the team in digs with 159 (2.84 per set). She is also second on the team with 14 service aces and fifth in kills with 53 on a .247 hitting percentage. Warrington is also fifth on the team with 19 total blocks, including three block solos.
Arkansas State moved up one spot to No. 22 in the PrepVolleyball.com poll after being ranked 23rd a week ago. The Red Wolves are 2-1 against other teams in the poll with the wins coming against No. 36 Missouri State and No. 39 Saint Louis, while the team’s only loss is to No. 23 Missouri.
The NCAA released its first Ratings Percentage Index report of the year on Monday with the Red Wolves coming in at No. 16. The next highest rated Sun Belt Conference team is Appalachian State at No. 87, while UT Arlington was next at No. 96.
A-State returns to action Wednesday night for an in-state SBC clash against Little Rock. First serve from the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, Ark., is set for 6:30 p.m.
