JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Preparations are underway for a big National Night Out event in north Jonesboro Tuesday evening.
Event organizers hope it's something that will create short term improvements and long term goals for the city of Jonesboro.
The North Jonesboro Neighborhood Initiative, that just gained their 501-c3 non-profit status, is putting on their 5th annual event.
Board member Reverend Dr. Charles Coleman said this year, as always, there will be a lot of food, games and door prizes. However, they hope to gain something else from the event too.
"Nationally, there's an epidemic that's dealing with our police officers," Rev. Dr. Coleman said.
Rev. Dr. Coleman told Region 8 News that while he feels the Jonesboro Police Department is working to break down those barriers, events like NNO help even more.
"Dealing with the police department, dealing with the fire department, dealing with any principle entity that runs Jonesboro, we need that type of cohesiveness and be able to walk in peace a little bit," Rev. Dr. Coleman said. "That's the short term goal."
As for creating long term goals, Rev. Dr. Coleman said that surveys handed out at National Night Out will help define those.
"It may be minor, it may be fix up a street, add another park, a swimming pool, whatever it is. We need to start doing what the people want," Rev. Dr. Coleman said. "Even if we can't get it all for them, at least we've got a grocery list. At least we've got a project list where we can start marking off, we've done this, we've done that."
So whether you want to make your opinion known or just head out for some free food and a good time, you can stop by the National Night Out event at the University Lions Park behind Success School from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The West End Neighborhood Association is also hosting a National Night Out event at CWL Park from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
