Council approves rezoning for off-campus student housing near A-State

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The Jonesboro City Council approved a rezoning request for off-campus student housing on Johnson Avenue.

In an 8-4 vote Monday, council members approved the rezoning for what will become University Woods.

However, council members added stipulations for developers.

Already, the Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission set forth eight conditions for the rezoning. Some of those include providing a management and security operational plan, and working with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department to provide a crosswalk for students.

The council added the stipulation that the housing be available for A-State students and faculty only. The condition also states that the Jonesboro Planning Department be notified during quarterly or monthly audits of who is living in the apartments.

The land, located across the street from Arkansas State University on Johnson Avenue, is nearly 16 acres. It has been zoned for commercial use since 2009. However, efforts to develop it commercially failed.

Zimmer Development told Region 8 News they plan to have the housing development open by Fall of 2017. They plan to clear the site and begin construction this upcoming spring.

Council members Dr. Coleman, Moore, Dover and Burton voted against the rezoning.
