HAYTI, MO (KAIT) -

Police arrested and charged three suspects this week while investigating a murder in Southeast Missouri.

Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell said Thursday that Chester Cummings, 45, of Hayti faces charges in connection to the death of David Phelps.

Cummings was arrested and charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action Wednesday.

He is in the Pemiscot County Jail with no bond and will be arraigned in circuit court on Oct. 13.

On Friday, Greenwell said Michael Hemingway, 36, of Portageville was arrested Wednesday night and charged with tampering with physical evidence the following day.

Hemingway is in the Pemiscot County Jail on a $500,000 bond. He will also be in court on Oct. 13.

Sheriff Greenwell announced Saturday that Ronda Jean Cummings, 44, of Hayti was also arrested in connection to the murder.

She was arrested Friday and held on charges of hindering prosecution of a felony and tampering with physical evidence.

She is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail with no bond and will also be arraigned in Pemiscot County Circuit Court on Tuesday.

This is the fourth arrest made after Phelps was murdered on Sept. 24. Bert Ellison was charged a day after Phelps was found dead in his driveway.

The sheriff says the case is ongoing and more arrests are possible.
