Wilson might start own police department

WILSON, AR (KAIT) - The town of Wilson wants to create a new police department.

The town is currently under the patrol of the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department.

Mayor Becton Bell said with all the industry coming into the county, the city is growing and needs more patrol.

The sheriff's department's budget is also causing some deputies to cover more areas than before.

"The sheriff is freezing some of his slots and that in turn causes the deputy in Wilson to have to cover more area outside of Wilson," Bell said.

Bell said the county has done a great job patrolling Wilson in past years, but he said it is time for the city's own department.

With the city council's approval, Bell has begun researching the cost of starting a police department.

He is also looking at grants the city could apply for in the future.
