JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The City of Jonesboro is taking the next step to create a new firing range for the Jonesboro Police Department.
In July, the city exchanged property with Jonesboro City Water and Light for the firing range.
For a few parking spaces downtown, CWL gave the city 25 of their near 70 acres of land located off Dan Avenue.
That's where JPD's new firing range will be located.
Before work can begin though, the land must be rezoned for Industrial Use.
At the Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission's next regularly scheduled meeting, the City of Jonesboro and CWL will both request rezoning of that land.
Though the city now owns 25 acres along Dan Avenue, CWL still owns more than 40 acres at that same site.
City Water and Light Special Projects Administrator Kevan Inboden told Region 8 News Thursday afternoon that even though they are also requesting a rezoning, CWL has no plans for the land. They are simply trying to get the land zone to fit "potential future uses."
The MAPC's next meeting will take place Tuesday October 13.
