Craighead Co. Sheriff's Office investigating in-custody death of inmate

CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - The Craighead County Sheriff's Department is investigating the in-custody death of an inmate at the detention center Friday night.

According to Sheriff Marty Boyd, 42-year-old William Chad Hardin was arrested Friday around 7:55 p.m. by the Jonesboro Police Department for parole violations and absconding.

He was facing 10 charges for contempt of court and 15 charges for nonpayment of fines.

A detention officer was doing routine cell checks around 11:55 p.m. when Hardin was found unresponsive in his cell.

Sheriff Boyd said they immediately began CPR and used the defibrillator on him.

EMS arrived at the detention center at 12:06 a.m.

Hardin was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's department and coroner are investigating the death.

Hardin's body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine a cause of death.
