Construction underway for Greene County business that will sell beer, wine

GREENE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Months after getting the go-ahead to sell beer and wine from the Arkansas Beverage Control Board, construction is underway for the Old Country Store along Highway 63 in Region 8.

The business will be located on a small piece of land in Greene County. It will be sandwiched between Craighead and Lawrence counties, both of which are dry.

In May, the ABC Board approved the application for a new beer off-premises and small farm wine retail permit.

Though some area residents gathered petitions against the permit, the ABC Board took into consideration letters of support from Mayor J. Stanley Debow of Sedgwick, State Representative James Ratliff, Sheriff David Carter, Greene County Judge Rusty A. McMillion, State Senator Blake Johnson, Lawrence County Judge Dale Freeman, and Constable Claude Graves.

The ABC Board granted the permit "conditional upon completion of construction, stocking the required amount of inventory and installation of a telephone with re-inspection by ABC Enforcement."
