Smoke break leads to discovery of gun, drugs

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A Jonesboro woman looking for her pack of cigarettes instead found drugs and a loaded handgun.

Just after 7 a.m. Tuesday Officer Gary Jackson was called to an apartment in the 600-block of East Alpine.

The 53-year-old caller told Jackson she stepped outside to smoke a cigarette and lifted the lid of the barbecue grill where she keeps her cigarettes and lighter.

Instead of smokes, she reportedly found a plastic grocery bag containing a gun and Frito corn chip bag containing drugs.

According to the incident report, the gun was a fully loaded 9mm semi-automatic Beretta handgun.

Inside the corn chip bag, the officer found a bag containing 1.3 ounces of marijuana, a small baggie containing 1.7 grams of cocaine and another plastic baggie containing 4 bars of Xanax.

Jackson collected all of the drugs and the firearm and took them to the Evidence Room at the Jonesboro Police Department.
