It's a familiar noise in newsrooms across America and right here in Region 8. You can hear some pretty interesting things on the police scanners…And some pretty sad things, too.
But, perhaps one of the saddest didn't involve death, violence or drugs… Recently someone reported a rock thrown by their neighbor's lawnmower had broken out their window. They wanted a police officer to come out and take care of it.
A police officer? What happened to talking things out?
There was a time when we KNEW our neighbors. We actually SPOKE to them. While our kids played together… We adults enjoyed a cookout or potluck.
When was the last time you talked to your neighbor? Do you even know their name? This country was built on neighbors helping neighbors.
Just for the record, this is something I have to work on, too. It's time we went next door and met our neighbors… Reach out and shake their hands… Maybe offer to help them with a problem… Change the oil, rake the leaves… Let them know a rock broke out a window.
We used to be called the "Good Neighbor Station." We still are. Now it's time for all of us to become good neighbors. Doing so will make this a Better Region 8.
