JONESBORO, AR (astateredwolves.com) – The Arkansas State women’s volleyball team claimed three Sun Belt Conference weekly awards with Carlisa May earning her sixth straight Freshman of the Week award, Markie Schaedig picking up the Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week accolade, and Mallory Warrington winning the Setter of the Week honor the league office announced Monday.
May, a native of Lee’s Summit, Mo., was the team’s leader in kills with 31 (3.88 per set) on a .302 hitting percentage across both matches the Red Wolves played this weekend. She tallied 13 kills on a .619 attacking percentage in the Red Wolves’ 3-0 win over South Alabama Friday and followed with 18 kills in the team’s five-set win versus Texas State Saturday.
A true freshman, May, is the team’s leader in kills this season with 247 (3.63 per set) and has hit at a .321 clip, the second highest mark on the squad. She has also contributed 37 digs and 20 blocks defensively on the season. The FOW award is her seventh of the season and eighth total weekly award from the conference.
Schaedig, who hails from Little Rock, Ark., collected 48 digs (6.00 per set) during A-State’s two wins this weekend. She tallied 20 digs versus South Alabama before picking up 28 against Texas State. She also handed out 13 assists and had a kill in the two matches with no receipt errors.
A junior libero, Schaedig is the team’s leader in digs with 375, which comes out to a 5.21 per set average that is ranked as 14th best in the country and second in the SBC. She is second on the team with 84 assists and has registered six service aces with five kills on the season. The weekly award is her third of the season and eighth career Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week accolade.
Warrington, a junior setter, was excellent once again in leading the team’s offense in wins over USA and Texas State. She dished out 93 assists (11.62) in the two matches and also had 10 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. She handed out 41 assists in the 3-0 over South Alabama Friday and followed with 52 assists and 18 digs for her team-leading 12th double-double of the year against Texas State on Saturday.
A native of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Warrington has recorded 820 assists for an 11.39 per set mark that ranks second in the league and 13th in the nation. Additionally, she is second on the team in digs with 209 and also has 22 blocks defensively. She has contributed 67 kills and has the second-most service aces on the team with 16. The team is hitting .271 on the season under her leadership, which is the second best mark in the SBC and 18th in the nation. This weekly award is her second Setter of the week honor of the year.
The Red Wolves remained ranked No. 22 in the PrepVolleyball.com Poll and received 12 points in the AVCA Top-25 poll. The team is 33rd in the AVCA Poll if you count past the top-25. Additionally, A-State jumped up to No. 13 in this week’s version of the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
Arkansas State returns to action Oct. 23 in a home match against ULM. First serve from the Convocation Center is set for 6 p.m.
